Prison Law is a vast area of legal practice. Not only does it concern the almost 90,000 prisoners housed within varying institutions across the country, but it also concerns those under the wing of the Probation Service in one way or another and persons with connections to prisoners who will be drawn into having to deal with the prison services creaking bureaucracy. Prison Law has been shaped by the lawyers, critically probing government policies, Prison Service Instructions and the activities of the various bodies who deal with prisoners. This course looks at all of the most recent changes that affect prisoner's lives and examines the current trends in this highly complex area, including: Treatment of Prisoners (this looks at whether prisoners are treated correctly according to standards of human rights or prison rules, what are the mechanisms for helping prisoners with their problems and what problems prisoners face); Prison Discipline ('phones, fighting, drugs and disobeying orders are a few of the ways your client can infringe the prison discipline system. Find out how to defend them in this part of the course); Methods of reducing sentence (compassionate grounds, HDC and learning about the different sentencing regimes will aid your client in knowing when he'll be out and whether it can be just that bit earlier); Parole (convincing the board that your client is no longer a risk has become something of an art form - learn the rules and theory of convincing the Parole Board). Course material will be provided on the day.
